Hosiery put to the test!

A pair of tights is usually put on with a certain amount of stretching, and fingernails or jewellery often snags on a single thread that will turn into a run or “ladder” once the leg is applying stress to the tights. 

Additionally, a ladder may be caused during the working day, such as a snag occurring when the tights are pushed against the underside of a desk. This can greatly inconvenience the wearer as it appears unprofessional and they may not have a spare pair. It can also be expensive.


As the manufacturer, the brand will appear low quality if a ladder forms too easily. It is difficult to avoid causing snags throughout the day, so the real test is the stress at which the snag turns into a ladder. We looked at this in a “mini study”; snags were deliberately introduced in a controlled manner and a stress applied to specimens of uniform size.

‘Denier’ refers to the linear density of the yarn used in manufacture. It is equal to the number of grams per 9000 metres. It is an archaic measurement but one that is widely known to consumers and a standard they can trust when they shop for hosiery.

A sample of fabric was cut from the main body of tights, ensuring tension was never applied. To induce laddering, three individual threads were cut, evenly spaced along the centre line. This sample was put under tension and the test filmed.

Using a Video Capture & Synchronisation System, the test performed on the TA.XTplus Texture Analyser obtained both force and video profiles allowing a frame by frame understanding of the ladder development.
